Types of Dental Fillings
If you never got dental fillings before, you might be confused by all the different types. For example, there are metal fillings and tooth-colored fillings. Metal fillings can be made of silver or gold. Silver fillings are cheap, but they’re the least cosmetic while gold fillings are expensive. Generally, metal fillings are more durable and last longer than tooth-colored fillings. They’re often used to treat posterior dental cavities.
Tooth-colored fillings are used when a cavity affects the patient’s front teeth. They can be made of composite resin, porcelain, or ceramic. Composite resin is the cheapest but only lasts five to ten years. Porcelain and ceramic fillings last longer and cost more.
Getting a Dental Filling
Dental fillings are simple and are almost always completed in a single visit. We’ll inject the tooth with local anesthesia first to keep you comfortable. Next, we’ll remove all the dead and infected tissues in the cavity. The filling has to be placed in a clean area. The area will also be prepared using a gel.
Now that the cavity is prepared, we’ll place the filling and harden it using ultraviolet light. The entire procedure takes less than an hour, and you can go home directly after. Patients should wait until the effect of local anesthesia is gone before eating. The sole purpose of this precaution is to keep you from biting your tongue or lips while they’re numb.
