Many people are nervous when it comes to going to the dentist. Some people are so nervous that they refuse to go even for routine exams and cleanings. However, if you want to keep a beautiful, healthy smile, our dentists at Sapphire Smiles Dental Specialists in Houston, Richmond, Magnolia, and League City can help you get through a visit with sedation dentistry.
What Sedation Methods Do Dentists Use?
To help adults and children get through a dental visit, our dentists use a variety of sedatives to relax their patients. Most sedatives also have an analgesic effect so that if you need an injection of pain medications, you won’t feel the shot.
Laughing Gas: The sedative that our dentists at Sapphire Smiles Dental Specialists use the most is laughing gas. The gas gets delivered through a mask that goes over the nose, and the patient breaths it in. It only needs a few short minutes for the gas to take effect. Patients will feel more relaxed and ready for their treatments.
Oral Sedation: Some people don’t like laughing gas, or they are too sensitive to it. If this is the case, our dentists may give those patients oral sedatives. The pills take about 20 minutes to go into effect, so patients will receive it when they check-in for their appointments. Then, when they go back to see their dentist, they will already feel relaxed.
IV Sedation: This type of sedation takes effect rapidly. Once the dentist puts the needle in your arm to deliver the sedative, it only needs a minute or two to take effect. IV sedation is also known as Twilight Sedation because you don’t feel any discomfort. You may not remember the procedure, but you will be awake and responsive to our dentists.
